FAQ's

What everyone wants to know!

Q1: What should I do to prepare for my acupuncture session?

To prepare for your acupuncture session, it is recommended to wear loose-fitting and comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the areas where the needles will be inserted. It is also advised to have a light meal before your appointment and to avoid consuming alcohol or caffeine on the day of your session. Additionally, it is beneficial to arrive well-hydrated and to inform your acupuncturist of any medications you are currently taking.

Q2:IS Acupuncture Safe?

Acupuncture is generally considered to be a safe and low-risk treatment when performed by a trained and licensed practitioner. The needles used in acupuncture are sterile and disposable, reducing the risk of infection. However, it is important to inform your acupuncturist of any medical conditions or medications you are taking to ensure safe and effective treatment.

Q4: Does acupuncture hurt?

Acupuncture is typically a painless or minimally uncomfortable experience for most individuals. The needles used in acupuncture are extremely thin, and the sensation felt during insertion is often described as a slight tingling or pressure. Some people may experience a brief sensation of warmth or slight soreness at the needle insertion point, but this discomfort is usually mild and temporary.

Q3: What is the difference between acupuncture and dry needling?

Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese medicine practice that involves inserting thin needles into specific acupuncture points on the body to promote healing, balance energy flow, and alleviate pain. It is based on the concept of meridians and the flow of qi (energy) within the body and is done by a qualified acupuncturist with extensive practical training.

Dry needling, on the other hand, is a Western medical technique that focuses on releasing trigger points (muscle knots) and relieving muscle pain, usually done by physios and chiropractors. It involves inserting thin needles directly into trigger points or tight muscles to stimulate a healing response. Dry needling is often used to target musculoskeletal issues such as muscle stiffness, tension, and pain.

It is dangerous to have acupuncture performed by someone who is not adequately qualified or trained in acupuncture techniques. Improper needle insertion, incorrect placement of needles, or lack of knowledge about anatomy and meridian points can lead to serious complications and risks, including:

Infection: If sterile needles are not used or if proper sanitation practices are not followed, there is a risk of infection at the insertion site.

Organ Injury: Inexperienced practitioners may inadvertently place needles too deep or in the wrong location, resulting in potential damage to internal organs or tissues.

Nerve Damage: Improper needling techniques can cause nerve injury or irritation, leading to numbness, tingling, or loss of sensation in the affected area.

Pain and Discomfort: Poor needle placement or incorrect depth of insertion can cause pain, bruising, or soreness after the treatment.

To ensure a safe and effective acupuncture treatment, it is important to seek out a licensed and certified acupuncture practitioner who has completed the necessary training and education in acupuncture techniques. A qualified acupuncturist will have a thorough understanding of acupuncture principles, meridian pathways, and safe needling practices to provide you with a professional and beneficial treatment experience.

Q5: Are there any side effects?

While acupuncture is a safe and natural treatment, some individuals may experience mild side effects such as bruising, soreness, or slight bleeding at the needle insertion sites. These side effects are usually temporary and resolve quickly. It is important to communicate any concerns or unusual reactions to your acupuncturist during your session.

Q6: Where in my body do you put the needles?

The specific placement of acupuncture needles will vary depending on your individual health concerns and treatment goals. Your acupuncturist will assess your condition and determine the most effective acupuncture points to address your symptoms. Commonly used acupuncture points are located on the arms/hand, legs/feet, abdomen, back, and ears.

Q7: What should I expect from my initial consultation?

During your initial consultation, your acupuncturist will conduct a thorough evaluation of your medical history, current symptoms, and overall health goals. You will have the opportunity to discuss any concerns or questions you may have about acupuncture treatment. Your acupuncturist will develop a personalized treatment plan based on your individual needs and preferences

Q8: What if I want to change my appointment?

If you need to change or reschedule your acupuncture appointment, we kindly ask for a minimum of 48 hours notice to avoid a cancellation fee. Changes made less than 48 hours before your scheduled appointment will result in a charge to accommodate our practitioner's time and schedule.

Q9: What if I'm running late for my appointment time?

If you anticipate being late for your acupuncture appointment, please inform us as soon as possible. If you arrive more than 15 minutes past your scheduled appointment time, our practitioner may not be able to provide a full treatment. In this case, you may still be charged for the scheduled session. Communication is key to ensuring a positive and effective acupuncture experience for both you and our practitioners.
